Some Devil Review

First of all, I'm not a big DMB fan. Don't get me wrong, I think certain songs his band has done are good, but I'm not one of these fanatic fans of his. Never saw him in concert, etc. However, this album...oh man, where do I start? The most powerful thing about this album is about half of the songs are throwaway, meaning the other half are WORLD-CLASS. I'll leave it up to you to decide which are which...but suffice it to say if I was stranded on a deserted island, this would be one of the albums I would want.........

Wake of the Dying Sun King Review

Wake of the Dying Sun King Overview

Wake of the Dying Sun King is the second full-length of epic meditative drone from this Southwestern Virginia collective. Like Pelt (with whom it shares several members), Spiral Joy Band uses mostly acoustic instruments to create slow, building pieces rich with human detail. The steady rolling of multiple Tibetan bowls, bowed and struck gongs, hypnotic fiddle, sruti box, and other instruments are recorded live in continuous performances that frequently stretch beyond an hour per piece. The performance aspect is key to Spiral Joy Band s aura - the variations in approach, force, etc. with which each tone is played, and the clear, open recording (mostly in Blacksburg s Glade Baptist Church) highlight the subtleties of the music. Wake is a much more percussive set of music than Spiral Joy Band s previous Lullabies for Jeff Dean CD, with Nathan Bowles expert percussion lending a lot more clang to the mix.

Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 Review

I don't think the DMB gets much better than what must have been an incredible late summer's night in the Colorado mountains in 1995. I had to smuggle these low-key tan-colored CD's from my friend's Case Logic one by one to listen to them, but the theft was worth it and I loved what I heard: like Crash, the sound is so instantly appealing, the definition of listenable, so sheeny and buoyant: listen to the little rubber ball-bounce quality of the guitar in the sneaking, teasing intro to Dancing Nancies, and Carter's falling stardust chimes mixing with the rocket ship vapor trail acoustic sound/"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" melody of "Satellite." Dave, too, still has that helium-balloon weirdness in his voice, but it's starting to mellow and enrichen and even flatten dully: the first encore song "Typical Situation" is so lonely; you can almost feel the darkness and wind starting to become chill and the dew starting to collect on the grass, and gets up to real pathos in a remarkable final two minutes filled with howled random syllables and sentence fragments firming up with the ironic recovery "we'll keep the big door open, everyone'll come around--you'll see." Great artwork, too...the album booklet has old black and white Gold Rush-era photos from`the actual construction of Red Rocks, and besides standard shots of the band, one photo is just of someone's shoes, all on almost-cardstock paper. If only I wasn't eleven at the time.

Fave lyric: "Some people drink, some people don't, / Some people think-- some people won't / Some people do and some people don't / but it's ok, 'cause it's meant to be that way." (Intro to "Recently")'

Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 Overview

Like a lot of his jam-band compatriots, Dave Matthews's personality can come off as muted in the studio, but really spreads out live--which makes this a must-have for fans who don't already have the bootleg, or nineteen more from the same period. But absent a hits sampler, Live at Red Rocks could also be the best Matthews album for more tentative listeners. It draws heavily from the Under the Table and Dreaming material, as well as from the then-upcoming Crash. "All Along the Watchtower," previously only available on an indie EP, ends the set. --Gavin McNett

0 Showtime!

Showtime! Review

You can't go wrong with a live J. Geils Band album. These guys were born to be on stage and during their '70s halcyon days, a better live rock & boogie band could you find.

Unfortunately, "Showtime" covers live material from the band's least creative (albeit most commercial) period -- the late '70s/early '80s. Their previous live recordings -- "Full House" and "Blow Your Face Out" -- are vastly superior, but having all three live albums certainly provides fans with a great retrospective of J. Geils concerts over the years.

If you like hot, sweaty, blues-based boogie rock played with a good-time frenetic approach, J. Geils is the band for you and any of their aforementioned live albums will represent nicely. But, as I said, by virture of the more pedestrian material covered here, "Showtime" is the weakest of the band's live efforts.

Finally, not that true fans need a history/geography lesson, but J. Geils Band formed in the bars, pubs and clubs of Boston... NOT Detroit. The previous reviewer seems confused. Perhaps because Geils had a song called "Detroit Breakdown" he assumed it was were the band hailed from. They are, however, from Beantown.

Anyway, former lead singer Peter Wolf continues to make great solo CDs -- check them out, too; especially "Sleepless."

Showtime! Overview

One of the most popular groups of the 70s, the J. Geils Band performed great rock & roll influenced by soul and r&b. Their renowned live performances are legendary. Showtime! is J. Geils 1982, million selling live album that captured their biggest hits at the height of their career and includes Love Stinks, Centerfold and I Do.

The CD was great - However - I received three CD's when I only ordered two and could not reach anyone at Amazon to fix the mess - So I payed for 3 CD's plus shipping - which was way too much - and couldn't find an address or number to call to return it within the 30 day period. I work out of town and cannot spend all day hunting for addresses or numbers for mistakes.
Too bad for me now- Too bad for Amazon in the future.

0 I Don't Want To Go To School

I Don't Want To Go To School Review

So when I first saw this CD I was kinda of disappointed that it was short than the first. But since I have been able to listent o it I am very happy. Their quailty of music has really increased and you can tell. Especially Alex's quailty.

If you read towards the end of my review I will talk about each song, but firsat I want to say I was also disappointed when I found in CD recording Nat and Alex said in an interview the other band members don't lay down the tracks they have thewr musicians do that but Nat and Alex play their instruments. Although they did say they are playing in live preformaces and on the show. That sounded odd to me. So I cant wait to read the fine print on this cd as I only have the electronic download right now.

Anyway like i said the quailty of the songs were much better, although I didnt enjoy any of them as much as the other cd their are many more I like. Simply put its a great cd now for the track run down.

1. I Don't Want To Go To School - This is the single they released, how I can see if I was Younger I may enjoy this song i really don't its rather catchy but I will say 3/5
2. Eventually This song is one thats a little deeper but it just isn't catchy like their other songs it is keep of a uplifting song talking about the sun, ("The sun will find us eventually") also 3/5
3. Mystery Girl Another premiere song of theirs, it gets back to their catchy nature and is toe tapping love song. "I never believed in love at first but I was wrong" 4/5
4. I'll Do Anything This song is certainly not tradionally for them it is very queit and heart felt. The lyrics are very touching but it doesnt grab my attention. ("I'll do anything for you") 3n1/2/5
5. I've Got a Question is another touching song that just doesn't catch me. While none of their songs are bad its just not up to my listening. "I've got a question for you, do you love me, ya!"
6. Body I Occupy This song is very catchy it appears in the background of one of their interviews and in their tv concert special. It is quite catchy and enjoyable a true NBB song
7. Why This song is by Alex and is one of those touching songs of there's and I just havent been liking them this album. "Why did you do it" 3n1/2 / 5
8. Proof of My Love This song appeared in one of their less populkar episodes "The Talk Show" it is catchy paino tune that rhymes "I know you think I'm wrong but I wrote you this song" 4/5
9. If You Can Make It Through the Rain Oh boy another really catchy song and very happy song "Will see what happens to you and me" 4/5
10. Three is Enough A song by Alex Wolff where nat plays the drums and he does some amazing dance moves. Extremely catchy 4/5
11. Everybody's Cried At Least Once This song was in last weeks episode and is very sad but touching I love it. "Everyody's cried atleast once, everybody's laughed atleastt twice" 4/5
12. Great Trip This song is really stuck in my head and is really catchy its about a trip to the water park and has some funny lines.

the last 3 tracks are found in the encahnced edition which I reccomend cause they are 2 more great songs WORTH IT
here is the link
I Don't Want To Go To School

13. Tall Girls, Short Girls... You - Great song my nat talking about differnet people then you. "Then there's you" 4/5
14. Changing [*] Another song by Alex very touching loving caring about his dad and changes. appeared in epsiode "uncle miles"
15. [CD-Rom Track] - Will update when IO receieve my hard copy. was not included in download

Overall I really reccomned this CD and if you can spring for the each 4 dollars get the enchanced version. I also suggest getting the season when it comes out on DVD

The Nitrate Hymnal Review

The Nitrate Hymnal Overview

"The music could qualify as chamber pop if it had any pretense of wanting to be pop - instead the violas, vibes, clarinets and cellos drift along behind Massey's wine-stained baritone, forming a sort of stream-of-consciousness backdrop that drifts in and out of dissonance, occasionally dissolving to a minimalist wisp." - PITCHFORMEDIA

"Tragic, hilarious, brilliant writing." - PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE

"Beautifully dissonant; unsettling and enrapturing in equal measures...this ambitious experiment succeeds on pretty much every level." - SPLENDID

The Gena Rowlands Band follows their Lujo debut Le Merde et Les Etoiles with a joint recording with Anti-Social Music called The Nitrate Hymnal, taken from the hit indie opera of the same name.

Anti-Social Music is a collective of musicians and composers from New York that includes members of the Hold Steady (French Kiss), Ida (Polyvinyl), Gutbucket (Cantaloupe) and World/Inferno Friendship Society (Gern Blandsten). The two bands met three years ago during the creation of the original production of a multimedia opera by Bob Massey and David Wilson. The opera, inspired by 50 years of home movies given to Massey by his grandfather, told the fictional story of a couple who obsessively filmed their own lives. For this recording, the score was cut into songs and re-orchestrated, then recorded in three days powered by passion and caffeine.

If you buy only one Dave Matthews cd, this should be the one but once you have this one you'll want more. It's that good. Rich musically with interesting, at times poignant lyrics.

Under the Table and Dreaming Specifications

With popcorn acoustic guitars, trampoline fiddles, bumper-car bass lines, and caramel-coated sax, the Dave Matthews Band's major-label debut is like an evening at the fair. "The Best of What's Around" and "What Would You Say" swirl like the amusement-park ride on the album's cover, sweeping the exhilarated and lightheaded listener higher as the ride spins faster. "Satellite" glides breezily like the prettiest horse on the carousel, "Ants Marching" runs around hitting the bell with the sledgehammer and winning the largest stuffed animals at the target-range booths, and "Lover Lay Down" is the quietest moment on the disc--like the sun setting on a baby's sleeping, snow-cone-stained face collapsed on her daddy's shoulder. --Beth Massa

Mountain: Live in Paris 1985 Review

I've seen Mountain several times live, including during their peak with the late great Felix Pappalardi. This DVD magnificently captures the unbelievable raw intensity of Mountain live. I was transfixed and hypnotized by the savage, brutal interaction between Leslie West and Corky Laing. The bass player, Mark Clarke, is outstanding, with a fantastic voice reminiscent of Jack Bruce's. Corky's drumming is as powerful and dynamic as ever. Leslie's voice sounds aggressive, yet perfectly controlled. His guitar playing is heavy and melodic, and sounds exactly as it did in Mountain's heyday. The sound is intentionally distorted, as it SHOULD be...that's exactly what Mountain sounds like live. I LOVED the intense, furocious sound. Crank this baby up and ENJOY! It's one of the most exiting music DVD's ever. Highly recommended!

0 Your New Favorite Band (Bonus DVD)

Your New Favorite Band (Bonus DVD) Review

Let it be said that when "Your New Favorite Band" was first released, it was far too early for the Hives to have a "best of" album -- they only had EPs and two albums in the bag. But it is a good sampler of their best songs, and a good introduction to their rough, raw brand of garage punk.

"Your New Favorite Band" takes four tracks from their breakout album, "Veni Vidi Vicious," four from their debut predecessor "Barely Legal," and finally four from their EP work. These songs are almost undeniably the best of the batch, like the roaring "A.K.A I-D-I-O-T," "Mad Man" or "Main Offender."

What these songs all have in common is an adrenaline-powered rawness, and a fast-paced energy that most garage and/or punk bands try to achieve, but few do. Okay, they don't have the most original sound in the world. They have, instead, vibrancy and a lack of musical pretension -- they are influenced by bands like the Stooges, but they don't wear those on their sleeves.

The kinetic riffs give the group half their sound. Each song is a roiling mass of percussion, guitar and bass, endearingly nasty and very entertaining. Howlin' Pelle Almqvist provides the other -- he sounds like he's literally foaming at the mouth when he sings stuff like "Mad Man." He lives up to the "Howlin'" part of his name, definitely.

The DVD that comes with the album is a nice bonus, though hardly necessary. It contains three fairly good music videos for "Hate to Say I Told You So," "Main Offender," and "Die, All Right!", which is a good accompaniment to the hits album but somehow it feels that there could (and should) have been more on the DVD.

"Your New Favorite Band" serves as an effective "best of" album, although the band seemed too young to have enough for such an album. In a nutshell, it's a great way to revisit the best of these energetic Swedish rockers, or to introduce newbies to them.

Your New Favorite Band (Bonus DVD) Overview

With their mix of '50s rock, '60s garage, '70s punk, '80s new wave and plenty of attitude, The Hives are the hottest band on the planet! You didn't know that? Then check out Your New Favourite Band , a "best of" CD+DVD that features the Top 10 Modern Rock hit "Hate To Say I Told You So" from their major-label breakthrough Veni Vidi Vicious, rare EP cuts and three videos. When issued in the U.K. as a CD-only in 2001,Your New Favourite Band went gold. The Hives are law! 0 The Invisible Band

The Invisible Band Review

I tell people who are not familiar with the band Travis to try and imagine a half-awake Tom Chaplin (lead singer of Keane) singing to the accompanyment of earthy-sounding, melancholic tunes very reminiscent of America, an old, but very good band from the 70's that cranked out such memorable hits as "A Horse With No Name", "Ventura Highway", "Don't Cross The River" and "Tin Man". Travis is practically a combination of the two above mentioned parties, yet with quite a bit of their own originality. I am really surprised that this band is not more well known, like Coldplay, but even when you are terrific, it is perhaps not necessary to be THAT well known. This album, "The Invisible Band" is just absolutely superb and just about every song is a winner. "Side" is one my personal favorites, as well as "Flowers In The Window", and "Sing". However, my ultimate favorite is "Pipe Dreams" and I was just shocked when I saw that this was not on their greatest hits album, "Singles".

At any rate, this is an album that is worth buying and is definitely a keeper for diehard Travis fans.

The Invisible Band Overview

The Invisible Band marks no major change in direction for Travis, but this is no bad thing. That Travis are the most simplistic of the post-Radiohead groups may not sound like the heartiest of compliments, but it undoubtedly accounts for their massive appeal. The Man Who became one of the most popular indie-rock records of the 1990s by virtue of its cheery accessibility and its way with a simple weather metaphor, and judging by the lyrics of "Side"--"The grass is always greener on the other side / The neighbor's got a new car that you wanna drive"--it's immediately obvious that come their third full-length album, Travis have figured out that their fans are not waiting for a brave sonic crusade. Which doesn't matter a bit, because The Invisible Band is such a natural, instantly lovable, and thoroughly unforced record, it seems completely churlish to knock it. The opening "Sing" sounds like, since their inception, all Travis have been missing is a banjo; the florid "Flowers in the Window" harks back to McCartney's finest Beatles compositions; and the synth-led "Humpty Dumpty Love Song" lays Travis's sentimental heart bare. "I'd pray to God if there were heaven," sings Fran Healy on "Pipe Dreams," "But heaven sounds so very far from here..." And that's exactly why Travis are so popular; they're the humble down-to-earth boys from next door, still singing the simplest songs, still making the mundane sound beautiful. --Louis Pattison

We're an American Band Review

This Japanese, mini-lp sleeve remastered version of Grand Funk's best album is the best version that's out there. Not only is the sound quality brilliant, the packaging is a work of art as well. The gold outer covering includes an insert with all the lyrics in English and Japanese as well as 4 stickers (2 blue and 2 red). Produced by Todd Rundgren, the quality of the original master is very evident on these tracks. We also get 4 bonus tracks which include an acoustic version of "Stop Lookin' Back" and a 2002 version of "We're An American Band."

This, the title track is to Grand Funk as "Smoke on the Water" is to Deep Purple. The band seems to be a little self conscious, talking about all the hotel rooms they'd thrashed and how "bad" they are as a band and it seems to me as if they were trying to get their listeners to accept them as worthy representatives among rocks elite at the time which was dominated by British giants like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc.

Listening to this album, although the tracks are not all excellent, this is still overall a very, very good rock album. This is essential listening for all 70s rock fans. Highly recommended.

0 Total Rock Review

Total Rock Review Review

The Total Rock Reviewers of the Doors are disc jockeys and others involved in the music industry. They review and rate the six Doors studio albums, providing in-depth focus. As for the band members, this review is noteworthy for its focus on guitarist Robby Krieger: its great portrayal of him, his guitar work, and his contribution to the group.

Because Robby wrote many fewer songs than lead singer Jim Morrison, Robby is arguably represented disproportionately. However, the proportion of his songs that are famous, including "Light My Fire," is comparable to Morrison's, and many performances of them are available on video clips. The commentators have many insights into Robby's guitar work, merited in obvious situations like his edge on "Love Me Two Times" and "L.A. Woman," but they also praise his slides on "Wild Child." Robby had some great musical ideas and riffs, and he talks about them. His bottleneck guitar playing, slithering and sliding up and down, had so much to do with the Doors' success. Some commentators play Robby's chords and licks on the guitar themselves.

As for John Densmore, he and his jazz drumming and Latin influences are covered fairly well. However, things fall short with Ray Manzarek. After all, his keyboards were something that set the Doors apart from most bands (even those that also had keyboards) and, on the first two LPs, captured the imagination of America. But there is not enough substance on his musical abilities and background, although his contribution to the group is acknowledged. Finally, Morrison as a performer comes off well in the comments. Interestingly, record producer Les Davidson agrees with me that he was more a lyricist than a poet, but I wish there had been more commentary on the lyrics themselves.

The discussion of the band members and the albums is overshadowed by the comments on selected songs. The number of songs chosen for discussion is uneven: 5-3-3-5-1-3 ½. "Morrison Hotel" is covered only by "Roadhouse Blues." The selectors apparently picked the best songs available for which there were video clips: live performances or videos made for the song. This Doors lover wishes there were treatment of EACH song on the superb first two albums.

The awarding of stars yields five for "The Doors" and "L.A. Woman," four for "Morrison Hotel," and three for "Waiting and the Sun" and "The Soft Parade." As for the surreal, psychedelic "Strange Days," the comments are favorable: "When the Music's Over" is given a pedestal along with the two AM hits, and credit is given for the album's good production. But true Doors aficionados vouch for the beauty and compelling emotion in "You're Lost, Little Girl" and "Unhappy Girl," the hypnotic and mind-blowing "My Eyes Have Seen You," and the precious "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind." Four stars are not enough for "Strange Days"; it outshines any Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or (by far) Creedence album. The only Velvet Underground album that compares is the first.

Still, I commend the commentators' acknowledgement of some underappreciated moments of the Doors. "The Soft Parade" was their most criticized album, but if you put it on you still hear better music than most, if you can meet Robby halfway for being a little syrupy in his songs. Morrison's "Wild Child" is given its proper recognition, and DJ Tank Montana declares of Morrison's title cut, "to a lot of fans, probably one of the finest performance songs to wrap up any of the Doors' albums." Through and through, the essence of the group is recognized. Critic Mike Devlin correctly observes in final comments that The Doors should go down as one of the 10 most important bands in rock history.

This is the ultimate critical review of the Doors, on record, on film and live on stage. Drawing on rare film and television archive material this independent and highly authoritative review revisits every single Doors album and critically reassesses the work of this legendary band from the 67 debut album right through to the seminal L.A. Woman. A leading team of music critics, musicologists and working musicians considers vintage performances by the Doors and traces the secrets of the bands success. This hard hitting powerful film pulls no punches when it comes to deciding what made the music work and, sometimes, why it didnt.

Stiff Upper Lip Live Review

AC/DC is my favorite band. This is a great movie, and I would suggest this to anyone who enjoys AC/DC. Of course, all their concerts, at least since the Razor's Edge tour, have been similar, with many of the same props. AC/DC's concerts are very exciting, and I would recommend buying all of their concerts/documentaries on dvd if you are on AC/DC fan.
The reason I give this product only 4 stars instead of 5 is because the dvd is in Regions 2,3,4,5, and 6, but not 1. Regions are a type of dvd format, called regions because different regions on the earth save it in their own format. Region 1 is the format that the U.S., Canada, and Bermuda have their dvd's in. My dvd player and playstation would not play the dvd due to "region restrictions," due to the fact that because I live in the U.S., the dvd players would read in region 1, but this does not play in region 1. Luckily, my computer can change to read in regions 2,3,4,5, or 6, and thus I watched this on my computer. I still recommend buying this, but because I don't know whether it was just that I bought it from a different company on amazon instead of amazon itself to save money (though the place I bought it from says it ships from Florida, U.S.), or whether all of the Stiff Upper Lip Live dvds come in these regions. I warn buyers that if you live in U.S., Canada, or Bermuda and do not have something that can adjust to play region 2,3,4,5, or 6 dvds, then you will not be able to play this dvd and you will waste your money buying it.

0 The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Let It Rock

The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Let It Rock Review

With so much posthumously released product---the Dead's catalogue, the Garcia/Grisman collaborations, remastered solo Garcia, and the JGB---it's hard to imagine that there's much left in the vaults to warrant euphoria from Jerry's devotees. But there is!

The newest release, Let It Rock, finds a skeletal version of the JGB. And this foursome, with session man extraordinaire, Nicky Hopkins, playing some gorgeous piano throughout---and even a few of his own compositions---plays with such synergy and vitality that it's remarkable they only lasted a mere handful of months. The playing is focused, bright, and inspired. The rhythm section is rock solid and Garcia's guitar tone has never sounded better: at times, it somewhat suggests the thick slabs of blues Roy Buchanan was known for when he was running circles around his peers in the early 70's.

Every tune is a winner here---from the lazy groove of "Let it Rock" to the bluesy riffing of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" to the delicious funk of "I'm a Road Runner" to the gentler tones of "I'll Take A Melody" and "Sugaree." Simply put: this is eclectic, melodic, controlled, and passionate guitar playing at its best.

The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Let It Rock Overview

For Jerry Garcia, 1975 was a seminal year that found him splitting time between recording Blues for Allah with the Dead, directing The Grateful Dead Movie, and forming the Jerry Garcia Band, his long-running side project. JGB's early days are the subject of a two-disc live collection of previously unreleased recordings from that momentous year. JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2: LET IT ROCK, JERRY GARCIA BAND, NOVEMBER 17 & 18, 1975, KEYSTONE BERKELEY.
